Investigators say they have cracked a heroin and gun sales network based in Long Branch and charged more than 40 people as part of the scheme, including a Long Branch restaurant owner they say was at the head of the criminal enterprise.

Investigators charged Anthony “Nygee” Stevenson, 44, of Overlook Avenue in Long Branch as the leader of the network that operated primarily in his hometown, according to the criminal complaints filed against him.

Stevenson gave his alleged co-conspirators specific roles in the hierarchical criminal enterprise, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Peter E. Warshaw Jr. Several people supplied his organization with drugs, and a pair of men were supplying guns from southern states that Stevenson was brokering for transport and sale in New Jersey, Warshaw said.

Stevenson has been on parole since his release last year from Northern State Prison in Newark where he was serving a sentence for aggravated manslaughter.

Since his release, Stevenson orchestrated and personally sold more than 38 bricks of heroin to undercover police officers during an eight-month investigation, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Peter E. Warshaw Jr.

A brick of heroin contains 50 glassine baggies of heroin, Warshaw explained.

Warshaw said that investigators determined Stevenson obtained most of his drugs from Uwenzen Jenkins, 39, of West Orange, after undercover officers watched Jenkins meet with two key Stevenson associates, Dario Woods, 32, and Keith Rogers, 40, both of Asbury Park, who were later arrested following a motor vehicle stop in Tinton Falls.

Woods, Rogers, and Kenrick M. Crawford, 43, of Sixth Avenue in Asbury Park, are key associates in the Stevenson crime network, Warshaw said.

Stevenson and Crawford were arrested Monday during a similar motor vehicle stop in Tinton Falls after undercover agents saw them purchase 50 bricks of heroin from Jenkins, Warshaw said. Jenkins was arrested Wednesday. Stevenson’s bail was set at $5.7 million.

County Sheriff’s investigators found 50 pot plants growing in the basement of a Bay Avenue home in the Leonardo section of the township, officials said.

Monmouth County Sheriff’s Officers Leonard Maxfield and Thomas Ruocco showed up at the door of a home in the 200 block of Bay Avenue on Monday to serve a fugitive warrant to Raymond Schmidt for allegedly failing to appear in court, officials said. When Justin Strohmenger, 31, who resides at the house, answered the door and denied knowing Schmidt, the officers could smell a strong odor of marijuana emanating from inside the house and observed drugs out in plain view, according to Cynthia Scott, spokeswoman for the county sheriff.

With a new search warrant in hand, and the assistance of County Sheriff’s Detectives Joe Rivera and Denise Guerra, as well as County Sheriff’s narcotics K-9 team Kurt Kroeper and partner Evan, investigators discovered 50 plants growing in the basement along with numerous containers of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, Scott said.

Strohmenger is charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with an intent to distribute and the manufacture of a controlled dangerous substance.

“An arrest like this helps combat the proliferation of drugs in Monmouth County and keeps the communities where we live safer,” said Sheriff Shaun Golden. “I commend all of the officers involved for their quick and decisive actions.”
